KUALA LUMPUR (July 2): Prasarana Malaysia Bhd has appointed the chief transformation officer of Malaysia Airlines Bhd's Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah as the group’s president and chief executive officer (CEO).
Yesterday’s announcement confirmed The Edge’s report last week (June 20) that Mohd Azharuddin could be appointed as the rail operator’s CEO, replacing Muhammad Nizam Alias who left under a cloud of controversy earlier this year.
At the same time, Prasarana also appointed former president and group CEO of Axiata Group Bhd Tan Sri Jamaluddin Ibrahim as its new group chairman, replacing Pasir Salak MP Tajuddin Abdul Rahman.
Both appointments will take effect from July 15, Prasarana said in a statement.
Jamaludin spent 12 years as president and group CEO of Axiata, while Azharuddin was formerly the CEO of the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) from 2015 to 2018.
Prasarana welcomed Jamaluddin and Azharuddin to its board, saying both figures have extensive experience in leading large companies in terms of operation and administration, as well as their involvement in formulating policies and initiatives for the public sector.
The rail operator also said Jamaludin’s appointment was in line with the government’s aspiration for the company to become more independent and increase its revenue — including non-fare revenue, and to develop into a successful government-owned corporate entity.
As for Azharuddin, Prasarana said his appointment would provide synergies from a public transport standpoint, due to his extensive experience in the land, air and public transport industry.
Following these two appointments, Prasarana said it is confident of achieving the group’s mission of implementing strategic transformation in the public transport system, driving economic growth, and being a catalyst to revitalising commercial and business sectors, moving forward.
