Overview
The mature town of Puchong is formerly a tin mining and rubber plantation area. It began to gain momentum in the 1980s, when Putrajaya became the new federal administrative capital and Cyberjaya began to develop.
By the 1990s, as more neighbourhoods are developed, Puchong became a central location and saw a surge in population. Its strategic location between Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, and close to Bandar Sunway, Putrajaya, Old Klang Road and Bukit Jalil, made it popular with homeowners and investors alike. Hence, Puchong was the fourth most searched area in the Klang Valley on EdgeProp.my in 2019.
Neighbourhoods that make up the township include Bandar Puchong Jaya, Pusat Bandar Puchong, Puchong Hartamas and Bandar Puteri Puchong.
Puchong is accessible via a number of highways — Damansara-Puchong Highway (LDP), Shah Alam Expressway, North-South Expressway Central Link, South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE), Maju Expressway, New Pantai Expressway and Federal Highway — and is serviced by the Ampang/Sri Petaling light rail transit (LRT) line. In 2016, the expansion of the line saw seven stations (located in Puchong) being added. They are Kinrara BK5, IOI Puchong Jaya, Pusat Bandar Puchong, Taman Perindustrian Puchong, Bandar Puteri, Puchong Perdana and Puchong Prima stations.
Other major townships bordering Puchong are Bandar Sunway (north), Bandar Saujana Putra (south), Ayer Hitam Forest Reserve on the east and Putra Heights and Kota Kemuning on the west.
Improving connectivicity and infrastructure
The extension of the Ampang/Sri Petaling LRT line has improved the traffic condition in the urban area and also help to bring attention to undeveloped areas in Puchong. Furthermore, areas within an 800m radius of the LRT stations are considered transit-oriented developments, which are eligible for a higher plot ratio of 1:8. Existing buildings located close to the LRT stations in Puchong include Giant Bandar Kinrara, IOI Mall Puchong, Tesco Extra Puchong and SetiaWalk.
Additionally, the Sungai Besi station in the upcoming MRT2 development will be linked to the Ampang/Sri Petaling LRT line; hence increasing the accessibility of Puchong. With that, the outlook for Puchong should remain healthy and stable, owing to the enhanced connectivity.
Amenities and Facilities
There are many well-known landmarks in Puchong such as IOI Mall Puchong, Puchong Financial Corporate Centre, SetiaWalk and As-Salam Mosque, also known as “the floating mosque”. Commercial centres in the area also have a wide range of services such as banks, retail stores, eateries and entertainment outlets. Meanwhile, Puchong residents can enjoy the outdoors at the Ayer Hitam Forest Reserve or Taman Wawasan, to sports activities at Spacerubix community centre or Kinrara Oval Cricket field.
Puchong is also well-known for its myriad of food choices. Population F&B offerings include Puchong Yong Tau Fu @ Batu 14, Restoran Foo Hing Dim Sum House, Puchong Mess Banana Leaf Rice and Mimi Nguyen Café.
