MELAKA (Oct 9): Too much monkey business may just send some primates off to an island. But it could be a good thing after all.
The Melaka government plans to gazette an island off the coast “as a King Kong park” to stem attacks by long-tailed macaques on local folk, reported The Star today.
"Troops of rowdy primates have been harassing people, including women and children.
"We need to address the macaque issue at once before it's too late," State Agriculture, Agro-Based, Entrepreneur Development and Cooperative Committee chairman Norhizam Hassan Baktee told the daily after an exco meeting at Seri Negeri here today.
The island being considered as the macaque sanctuary is Pulau Nangka.
Norhizam revealed that there had been about 580 reports of macaque attacks in the state since January.
And it would be a Garden of Eden of sorts for the pesky macaques as the “island would be planted with fruit trees to ensure sufficient food for the primates”.
The report also stated that the Melaka Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) recorded “approximately 118 troops of macaques in the state”.
And how many monkeys are there in a troop? 20 to 50. Okay, off to the island you guys go!
