KUANTAN (Oct 22): The Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustaffa Billah Shah has ordered that the agencies involved review the regulations and policies related to old buildings to avoid fire tragedies that risk claiming lives and destroying properties in the state.

Al-Sultan Abdullah said that all old buildings or premises need periodic inspection to ensure they are safe to live in.

"It's time for the parties involved to check the old buildings...if you feel unsafe, tell us because we don't want a tragedy to happen.

"We also need to make a policy related to old buildings or premises because I am worried that this fire incident will be repeated in other places and the recent incident can be used as an eye opener to the administration," he said.

His Royal Highness said this after visiting the fire site of three business premises in Jalan Besar here today.

On Saturday, three century-old premises operating carpet, money changing and sundry good businesses were destroyed by fire and no injuries or loss of life were reported.

Al-Sultan Abdullah said the approach is very important and it needs to take into account to ensure it is on par with the strict rules set by the local authorities as well as the district and land offices in constructing new buildings in the state.

"I sympathised with the families involved in this fire, but no matter what, we have to accept this fate.

"I would like to thank all parties including the firemen who quickly extinguished the fire. If you see it on social media, it's quite scary because the fire was very big," he said.
