KOTA KINABALU (Jan 17): Land on Mantanani island, which is a popular diving spot in Sabah, has been listed for sale at a price of RM12 million, according to a report by The Vibes.

Additionally, the sale listings had stated that 30 acres of land is up for sale of which it is open to non-citizens as well.

This is not the first time that land on the island has been listed for sale, previously the 2.95 hectares (7.3 acres) of plot on the island was listed at RM14.3 million in October 2021. The seller has also claimed that the land’s native title (NT) could be converted into a country lease.

Islands in Sabah have been making appearances on sale listings over the years where Mengalum island was listed in 2011 at US$18 million (RM75.21 million), Pandanan island in Semporna at US$2 million and Montukod island off Papar at RM35 million.

It is beyond the state government’s control if the landowner, be it villagers or the local, want to sell their land, according to the report by The Vibes.

Currently, areas nearby the island are being gazetted to become a state marine park due to be completed in 2023.

Mantanani island consists of three islands and are well known among divers for its dugong sightings.
