KUALA LUMPUR (July 10): Malaysia’s daily Covid-19 infections rose to a new record of 9,353 today, while another 87 fatalities were reported, taking the death toll past the 6,000 mark.

Today’s deaths compare with 77 reported yesterday, and raise total fatalities to 6,067, said Heath Director-General Tan Sri Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Meanwhile, today’s new cases compare with the previous record high of 9,180 infections registered just yesterday, and bring the country’s total cases to 827,191.

Selangor and Kuala Lumpur accounted for 62% of the cases amid a testing ramp-up in areas placed under the Enhanced Movement Control Order.

Selangor reported 4,277 cases compared with 4,400 yesterday, raising the state’s cumulative cases to 281,670, said Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement.

Kuala Lumpur’s cases rose to 1,398 from 1,271 yesterday, while Melaka saw a big surge in the number of infections to 835 from 220.

Elsewhere, Negeri Sembilan reported 638 cases, followed by Johor (399), Kedah (364), Sarawak (352), Sabah (251), Pahang (247), Penang (180), Perak (145), Kelantan (89), Labuan (85), Terengganu (50), Putrajaya (39) and Perlis (four).

Active cases soared further to 84,021 as daily recoveries remained below new infections at 5,910.

The total number of discharged cases stood at 737,103, giving a recovery rate of 89.1% when compared with the cumulative infections of 827,191.

The number of patients in intensive care units totalled 959 — the same as yesterday — of which 451 are on ventilators.

29 new clusters

The Ministry of Health reported 29 new Covid-19 clusters, bringing the number of active clusters in the country to 870.

Of the new clusters, 19 are from the workplace and five from the community, while the rest are from high risk groups and detention centres.

To date, the ministry has identified 3,058 clusters, with 2,188 having been declared ended.

Meanwhile, Malaysia's basic reproduction number (R-naught or R0) for Covid-19 infections nationwide now stands at 1.11, with Putrajaya having the highest R0 of 1.19.

This R0 or Rt projects the average number of people that each new Covid-19 patient will infect, or what is termed the effective reproduction number. An R0 of less than 1.0 means the infection is not spreading.
