Malaysia's Covid-19 cases rise slightly to 4,743 on June 22

KUALA LUMPUR (June 22): Malaysia's new Covid-19 cases stayed below the 5,000 mark for the second day running, but the 4,743 infections reported was slightly higher than 4,611 posted yesterday.

Today’s cases represent a 6.87% positivity rate, from a total of 69,064 people tested across the country.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said 77 Covid-19 related fatalities were reported in the 24 hours as of noon today, raising the country's death toll to 4,554.

Of the latest deaths, 32 were reported in Selangor, 12 in Negeri Sembilan, eight in Johor, seven in Sarawak, five in Kuala Lumpur, four in Melaka, three each in Sabah and Labuan, and one each in Pahang, Perlis and Terengganu.

Daily recoveries continued to outpace fresh infections for the 16th straight day with a total of 5,557, bringing down the number of active cases to 62,027.

Total recoveries increased further to 639,181 or 90.6% of total cases, which now stand at 705,762, said Dr Noor Hisham in a statement.

He said 875 Covid-19 patients were being treated in intensive care units, including 445 that needed ventilator support.

The director-general also said that all but two of  today's 4,743 new cases were locally-transmitted.

Selangor — the worst-hit state — registered 1,566 cases, compared with 1,346 yesterday.

Kuala Lumpur came in second, reporting 635 cases versus 310 yesterday.

They were followed by Negeri Sembilan (585), Sarawak (507), Johor (239), Penang (195), Sabah (193), Melaka (167), Kelantan (165), Kedah (142), Pahang (131), Labuan (104),Perak (68), Terengganu (37), Putrajaya (seven), and Perlis (two).

21 more clusters detected

The Health Ministry reported 21 more Covid-19 clusters in the 24 hours up to noon today, including 13 workplace clusters and five community clusters. The remaining clusters are linked to a detention centre, high-risk groups and education institutions.

They were identified in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Kelantan, Sarawak, Kedah and Melaka.

To date, 2,666 clusters have been reported nationwide, of which 1,816 have been declared ended.
