KUALA LUMPUR (Jan 7): The High Court has set Jan 24 for the hearing of Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak's stay application in relation to the Inland Revenue Board (IRB)'s RM1.69 billion claim of unpaid taxes against the former prime minister.
After an in-chambers case management today, Najib's lawyer Muhammad Farhan Shafee told the press that Justice Datuk Ahmad Bache has set Jan 24 for the hearing of the former premier's application for a stay of proceedings, as well as the IRB's application to obtain a summary judgement.
Also present were Datuk DP Naban and Norhishaam Ahmad, who appeared on behalf of IRB.
Najib's lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah had previously challenged Naban's appointment, because the legal firm he came from could be in conflict of interest.
However, the bid was subsequently withdrawn after the senior lawyer's letter of appointment was shown in court.
The IRB had on June 25 last year filed the suit against Najib, seeking RM1.69 billion in additional tax assessments in 2011 to 2017, at a 5% interest per year from the date of judgement, with costs and reliefs deemed fit by the court.
This followed the former premier's failure to respond to an initial inquiry by the IRB of additional tax assessments of RM1.47 billion in March 2019, resulting in a 10% hike of RM147 million in April and another compounded 5% hike of RM80 million in May.
