PETALING JAYA (Oct 17): A musical fountain in front of Sarawak's Dewan Undangan Negeri building that is worth a whopping RM31 million has raised questions over its extravagance, reported The Malaysian Insight.
PKR's See Chee How, the assemblyman for Batu Lintang, had asked Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg why it cost so much to develop an 80m stretch opposite the already-grand state assembly building and had urged for an investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) into the edifice.
Abang Johari had evaded questions on the RM31 million fountain at a press conference today after launching the eighth Alliance for Healthy Cities (AFHC) global conference and general assembly in Kuching today, saying he would only entertain questions about healthy cities.
See drew comparisons between the fountain and two other new landmarks in the vicinity – namely the Darul Hana pedestrian bridge (more popularly known as the Golden “S” bridge) which costs RM35 million and the floating mosque which costs RM10.6 million.
The bridge links the south bank, where Kuching's commercial centre is, to the north bank where the state assembly building, Istana and 12 Malay villages are.
“Is the Darul Hana musical fountain such a monumental engineering feat equal to the Darul Hana bridge or three times the cost of the floating mosque?” queried See.
He also questioned if the project was “excessively priced” to benefit a contractor.
