PETALING JAYA (Aug 28): The last Rock Corner music store is shuttering on Sept 2 after a 28-year run, reported The Star.
The outlet is located at The Gardens Mall in Kuala Lumpur and was part of a chain comprising up to nine stores throughout the Klang Valley during the music store's heyday.
Rock Corner's co-owner and co-founder Frankie Eng attributed the outlet's closure to an onslaught of challenges such as slowing physical music sales, high rental and the music industry's shift to streaming.
"It will be a sad day for music fans,” he told the daily.
The store began as a small shop at Kota Raya mall in KL before expanding to prime locations such as Mid Valley Megamall and Suria KLCC.
However, the chain closed the stores in these malls a few years ago, consolidated its operations and started selling vinyl recordings.
The “writing was on the wall” after the closure of three stores in The Curve, Bangsar Village and Subang Parade last year, said Eng.
Nostalgic netizens on Rock Corner's Facebook page reminisced about buying concert tickets at its outlets and picking up the latest albums from their favourite singers.
"Been supporting and buying CDs and DVDs since 2008 in Rock Corner, been to the Garden one and also the KLCC one, it's been a joy to have you Rock Corner as part of my memories, never forget those first hand Mariah Carey, Adele, Taylor Swift CD or albun that I always got from these Rock Corner shops, thank you for your services,” said Facebook user Vik Shang.
