KUALA LUMPUR (July 2): If all things go according to plan, Kota Giam, Jelutong in Penang will host up to 2,000 People’s Housing Project (PPR) homes.

According to a report by The Star, a technical team from the Housing and Local Government Ministry has conducted a site visit at the two proposed plots for the project which are located near an Indah Water Konsortium facility.

Penang Local Government, Housing and Town and Country Planning committee chairman Jagdeep Singh Deo (pictured) said the 3.23ha plots have been already been identified by the state authorities for the PPR units.

“If the land is suitable, the project will see at least 2,000 units here in two or three years,” Jagdeep said during a media conference near the site, reported The Star.

The Penang government announced last month that it will oversee all housing projects by the Federal government in the state.

These projects entail affordable housing, low medium-cost and low-cost (LC) units, as well as abandoned Federal housing projects.

Also included are the 1Malaysia People's Housing Project (PR1MA) in the state.

“Following discussions with Housing and Local Government Minister, Zuraida Kamaruddin, she agreed to let us monitor and supervise the project's progress, instead of the federal agency," Jagdeep said last month.
