SEREMBAN (Dec 1): The state is not ready to declare Seremban a city even though the status had been granted by the federal authorities in 2012.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan said before Seremban could be declared a city, Seremban municipal council (MPS) and Nilai municipal council would have to be merged.
“However, the Seremban and Nilai municipal councils have two different administration systems. For example, the quit rent and assessment rate in Seremban and Nilai are different. Nilai has a higher tax rate.
“We would need to streamline the administration system of the two, including accounts and operational costs, which is a complex process.
“We also need to streamline the by-laws. All this takes time,” he said in response to a question from Mambau assemblyman Yap Yew Weng (DAP) in the state assembly sitting yesterday.
Mohamad said the basic amenities also needed to be improved before the town could be declared a city.
“We need to improve the drainage system to alleviate floods and we must have a proper public transport system and infrastructure as well. (There needs to be) an efficient cleaning service and control in development plan.
“All these need to be in place first," he said. -- The Malaysian Insider
