IPOH (Feb 4): Forty-six staff members of Ipoh City Council (MBI) were appointed today to serve as the first batch of liaison officers on the council's area communication committee.

Mayor Datuk Zamri Man (pictured, right) said the new committee was formed to improve overall efficiency in dealing with public complaints and feedback.

"MBI currently oversees 643sq km if city populated by more than 710,000. With constant development and progress, the needs of the residents are also bound to increase.

"The council has lined up a string of clean-up and social activities for the community, divided into 23 zones.

"Each zone will have two MBI liaison officers in charge to assist the city councillors and civil society movement members who are already in place," he said at the official appointment ceremony in Ipoh Town Hall yesterday.

Zamri said the liaison officers would serve until next year and receive an additional RM50 monthly allowance in their new role.

City councillor M Veeran welcomed the liaison officers, whose introduction he foresaw would shorten the time it took for official reports to be compiled at the council.

"The new liaison officers are chosen according to their areas of residence.

"They are bound to be familiar faces in their neighbourhood and since they know the ins and outs of the council departments, they will have no problems filing the reports promptly and accordingly," he said.

He said that a six-month trial of the process last year had showed promising results.

"City councillors were getting additional eyes and ears on the ground for public complaints and were able to better resolve issues with the competent helping hands within MBI itself.

"That is why the committee was officially introduced," he said. -- The Malaysian Insider
