KUANTAN: The role of the Malaysian Implementation and Coordination Unit (ICU) which till now only served as a monitoring body for the implementation of government projects, will now be expanded to resolve problems involving the projects.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had given the new task to the unit some months ago.
"Before, the role of the ICU was as a monitoring body but recently the Prime Minister made a decision that the unit would also be a trouble shooter. If there is a problem in implemeting a project, the ICU will act to solve
the problem," Nor Mohamed told reporters at on Friday Jan 29 after a dialogue session on the 10th Malaysia Plan between him and Pahang state offcials which was also attended by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob.
Nor Mohamed said the new role given to the ICU was due to bureaucracy problems faced in in implenting projects. "There are not many such problems but there are things like the appointment of consultants - whether federal ministries or agencies at the state level appoint them. I think there is a way to make our planning and approval of projects more effective," he said.
Nor Mohamed said more frequent meetings will be held between the ICU, ministries involved and state governments to check on project developments and to resolve quickly problems such as those pertaining to allocation, land and other aspects.
On the meeting today, he said discussions were related to the implementation of the 10th Malaysia Plan.
"Many issues were discussed on the priorities that needed to be given for projects such as hospitals and roads and some of the barriers to the implementation of projects quickly and effectively," he said.
Also discussed were projects approved under the Ninth Malaysia Plan but could not be implemented for various reasons, to determine if they should come under the 10th Malaysia Plan or not.-- Bernama
