KUALA LUMPUR: The government is mulling plans to build a new Parliament House in Putrajaya while the existing building will be repaired and maintained as a heritage building, said a Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz.
However, he said, the proposal was still being studied and a final decision has yet to be reached on the construction of the new Parliament House.
"The matter will be referred back to the Cabinet for discussion. We will consider all aspects and the best approach, but no final decision has been reached," he told reporters at the Parliament lobby, here on Wednesday June 9.
He said the construction of the new Parliament House was expected to cost RM800 million while about RM150 million was needed to upgrade the existing Parliament building.
"Actually, the (existing) Parliament House has become a heritage building, we can't demolish it and at the same time, we must ensure that the building is being used. So, we will think which is the best approach," he said.
