KUALA LUMPUR (April 19): There are about 63,000 people on the waiting list for People's Housing (PPR) and Public Housing (PA) houses, said Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) director (Housing Management and Community Development), Wan Mohd Ghazali Nor, Bernama reported today .

And it is with this in mind that he is miffed by the fact that some recipients of such houses have rented them out for quick profits. "If they already have their own houses, give back the PPR or PA units to DBKL. There are many more people who need the houses," he said.

Meanwhile, DBKL executive director of economic development, Datuk Mohd Sauffi Mohamad said stern action will be taken against those who abuse the PPR and PA housing schemes. "We take back the houses," he warned.

He said based on a survey conducted last year, 35% of the 46,454 units of PPR and PA houses were believed to have been rented out by the registered lessees.

"Their actions are not only against the law, but also hamper the government's efforts to help the needy," he added.

Mohd Sauffi said that as of March, DBKL had repossessed 150 PPR and PA housing units after the registered owners were found to have leased their homes. He said DBKL would continue to conduct checks to ensure there are no breaches in the lease agreements by the recipients of the PPR and PA homes.
