- The programme, which was slated to expire on Dec 31, 2024, enables electricity consumers to generate their own solar power and offset it against their consumption on a one-to-one basis.
KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 18): The government will extend the current net energy metering (NEM) 3.0 programme till June 30, 2025 to continue incentivising rooftop solar installation, announced Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in his Budget speech.
The programme, which was slated to expire on Dec 31, 2024, enables electricity consumers to generate their own solar power and offset it against their consumption on a one-to-one basis.
NEM 3.0 consists of three categories, the 400MW NEM Rakyat (for households), 100MW NEM GoMEn (government buildings) and 1,100MW NEM Nova (commercial and industrial users).
The NEM Rakyat had only recently received a 50MW quota expansion, after its then 350MW quota had been fully subscribed.
According to the latest data from the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (Seda), there is currently 26.54MW from the total 400MW quota under NEM Rakyat, with 335.74MW or 89.9% approved.
Meanwhile, for the second category, the NEM GoMEn scheme, there are still 42.06MW remaining from the total 100MW, with 47.6MW or 82.15% already approved.
For the third category, the NEM Nova scheme, 68.88MW remain available out of the 1,100MW total allocation, with 952.49MW or 92.37% approved.
NEM 3.0 replaced the 500MW NEM 2.0 programme, which was introduced in January 2019 and expired at the end of 2020.
