PETALING JAYA (Sept 3): Tropicana Corporation Bhd (KL:TROP) inked a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with GreenRE Sdn Bhd on Tuesday to emphasise its commitment to provide sustainable and green buildings across its property development projects.

Tropicana deputy chief executive officer (CEO) Khoo Thian Shyang told the press that the company will have a long-time collaboration with GreenRE under the MOU, with 17 of its projects being GreenRE-certified. The signing of MOU also shows the company’s commitment to reduce its carbon footprint in its township and leverage on GreenRE’s expertise to get its property developments green-certified.

At the same event, the developer also announced that two of its upcoming projects — phase two of Avisa Residences (two-storey terrace homes) at Tropicana Alam, Puncak Alam, and Twin Pines serviced suites at Tropicana Grandhill, Genting Highlands — have obtained the GreenRE provisional award.

A provisional award by GreenRE is given to developments still in the development stage. Once the development is completed, there will be a final review to award the final certificate.

“To this end, we want to reinforce our position as an eco-friendly and sustainable community builder, as well as share our support towards Malaysia’s ambition to be carbon neutral by 2050. This initiative also aligns with our ongoing ESG (environmental, social, and governance) commitment to encourage property buyers to adopt greener living, reduce carbon footprint, and embrace a cleaner and greener future,” said Tropicana Corp executive director of marketing and sales and business development Ixora Ang.

Meanwhile, GreenRE executive director Ashwin Thurairajah said during his speech: “This MOU is a testament to our shared goal of raising awareness on the importance and benefit of green buildings. It reflects our joint commitment to promote green buildings and sustainable development”.

He added that there are more than 700 projects that have been registered for GreenRE certification. Of these, about 400 projects have been GreenRE-certified, with 14% platinum-rated and 24% gold-rated. Besides that, GreenRE has also rated international projects, such as the retail mall of Battersea Power Station in London, UK, and Cambodia’s AEON Mall Mean Chey.

Despite that, the journey towards greener buildings is still long, Ashwin noted. “As of last year, we have over 15 billion sq ft in Malaysia and less than 1% are certified.”

GreenRE is a green rating tool, established in 2013 by the Real Estate and Housing Developer’s Association of Malaysia to promote and drive sustainability in Malaysia’s real estate sector.
