KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 9): UEM Sunrise Bhd (KL:UEMS) collaborated with social enterprises under the Ministry of Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development to hold a ‘Waste to Wonder’ community programme in July, according to a press statement on Friday.

The statement highlighted that the ‘Waste to Wonder’ programme aims to promote sustainable waste management practices and environmental conservation through creative approaches and to raise awareness on the importance of preserving natural resources and ecosystems.

Two events, namely "Know Your Edibles" and "Waste to Wonder Hunt", were held at UEM Sunrise's Kiara Bay development in Kepong on July 24 and 28, respectively, as part of the Waste to Wonder programme.

"Know Your Edibles" is a collaboration with social enterprise Knowledge New Old Twists and two of the company's PINTAR-adopted schools, namely SK Rinching Hilir and SK Bangi. Through the event, students aged 10 to 12 participated in experiential activities learning about planting and composting techniques as well as maintaining an edible garden.

For the "Waste to Wonder Hunt", the company collaborated with social enterprise partners namely Hara Makers, KITARAN, Kitarefill, Refiller Mobile, Luzou and SIREH Park. The event featured activities such as demonstration of converting waste into valuable resources and sustainable planting techniques. Additionally, participants were also rewarded with edible garden products from Eats, Shoots & Roots.

In the statement, UEM Sunrise chief executive officer Sufian Abdullah said, “This dedication reflects our ongoing commitment to sustainable practices and environmental responsibility, in line with the company’s environmental, social and governance initiatives. We strive to cultivate a culture of sustainability at a very young age and believe that every effort, no matter how small, contributes to the greater cause of nature conservation that further makes a positive impact to the communities we serve.”

KITARAN co-founder Emir Bustami said, “We are thrilled to partner with other social enterprises in this initiative, providing us the opportunity to educate the community about transforming waste into reusable items, whilst enhancing the value of existing products. Such efforts are essential for the preservation of our natural environment.”
