The Penang Light Rail Transit (LRT) project is an exciting development that aims to enhance public transportation in Penang, Malaysia.

This exciting initiative is not only set to transform the way people move around the island but also offers a golden opportunity for savvy investors.

Let’s discover what the Penang LRT is, and some attractive properties curated just for you.

1. What to know about the Penang LRT

The LRT system is part of the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP), which includes an integrated network of transportation solutions.

The proposed LRT line, known as the Bayan Lepas LRT, will cover a distance of approximately 29.9 kilometres. It is envisioned as the main North-South rail backbone on the island.

The construction for the LRT line is set to begin by the fourth quarter of 2024, and the first phase is estimated to complete in five years.

2. Stations and connectivity

The LRT will have a total of 27 stations, and 19 stations will be located along a 22km stretch of the island.

Another eight stations are planned for the three proposed reclaimed islands off the southern coast.

The main LRT line will connect Komtar in George Town (city centre) to the Penang International Airport (PIA) in Bayan Lepas (southern part of the island).

After the Federal Government took over the implementation, the route was extended to include Tanjung Bungah as well.

Underground and undersea stations

Some of the proposed LRT stations will be built underground and located underneath the city centre of George Town

One of these underground stations will serve as a major interchange for a future undersea train line connecting the island to a large area of Seberang Perai (from Kepala Batas to Simpang Empat).
