38% of Malaysia’s population fully vaccinated against Covid-19 as of Aug 20, total jabs given top 30 million

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 21): Malaysia’s total number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered as of yesterday (Aug 20) topped 30 million, although the daily figure fell to 483,855 from 517,692 for the previous day, official data showed.

The cumulative number of vaccine shots given out rose to 30.37 million, from 29.89 million on Thursday (Aug 19), according to the latest updates on Twitter today by the Special Committee for Ensuring Access to Covid-19 Vaccine Supply (JKJAV). 

Meanwhile, the total number of fully vaccinated persons hit 12.41 million, representing 38% of the nation's population. 

Some 17.96 individuals, or 55% of the population, had received at least the first dose of the vaccine as of yesterday, JKJAV said, citing data from the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF).

In terms of the adult population, the percentage of fully vaccinated adults in the country stood at 53%.

In the Klang Valley, the percentage of the fully vaccinated among the adult population reached 78.5% as of yesterday, equivalent to 4.86 million people. 

The Klang Valley, which consists of Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, was the third highest in terms of fully inoculated adults — behind Labuan (90.4%) and Sarawak (83.6%).  

On another note, Malaysia's new Covid-19 cases crossed the 23,000 mark for the first time yesterday with 23,564 infections, up from 22,948 reported for the previous day. 

The latest cases were discovered by testing 162,473 individuals across the country in the 24 hours as of noon yesterday, indicating a positivity rate of 14.5%, said Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Daily infections continued to climb to new records in the past two days after surging past 22,000 on Wednesday (Aug 18) to the previous record of 22,242 — despite the country having one of the fastest vaccination rates in the world, with over half a million vaccine shots doled out daily.
