Malaysia's new Covid-19 cases fall to 17,236; another 212 deaths recorded

KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 9): Malaysia's new Covid-19 cases dropped further to 17,236 today, down from 18,688 yesterday and the lowest in seven days.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said Selangor continued to be the largest contributor with 5,740 new infections, followed by Kuala Lumpur (1,567), Kedah (1,328), and Sabah (1,247).

The latest infections were discovered from 122,067 individuals tested across the country in the 24 hours as of noon, indicating a positivity rate of 14.12%, which is higher than yesterday's 13.03%.

Dr Noor Hisham said 97.8% of the new cases today were of Categories 1 and 2, meaning asymptomatic and mild symptoms cases.

Some of the cases remain in the same categories throughout the period of infection, but some will improve to a lower category or worsen to a higher category, he said in a statement.

A total of 4,556 cases, or 26.4% of the cases reported today, had history of Covid-19 immunisation.

Total deaths rise to 10,961

Dr Noor Hisham said another 212 deaths were recorded in the 24-hour period, lifting the country's total fatalities due to the pandemic to 10,961.

Of the latest fatalities, 76 were reported in Selangor, 24 in Johor, 20 in Kedah, 18 in Kuala Lumpur, 16 in Pahang, 14 in Negeri Sembilan, 12 in Penang, 11 in Sabah, eight in Melaka, five in Terengganu, four in Kelantan, two in Perak, and one each in Perlis and Sarawak.

The director-general said 16 of the fatalities reported today were brought in dead.

Despite the fall in new infections, active cases continued to climb to 227,230, from 225,393 yesterday.

A total of 1,095 patients are being treated in intensive care units, including 579 who need respiratory assistance.

Daily recoveries, which totalled 15,187, continued to lag behind new cases. Cumulatively, total recoveries increased to 1.04 million, versus 1.28 million total infections nationwide.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry announced 36 new Covid-19 clusters, comprising 19 workplace clusters, 13 community clusters, two clusters from detention centres, and one each in religious and high-risk groups.

To date, 3,974 clusters have been reported nationwide, including 2,742 that have been declared ended.
