Malaysia’s daily Covid-19 cases surge to new high of 17,045 on July 25

KUALA LUMPUR (July 25) : Malaysia's daily Covid-19 cases – which charted new highs of 15,902 yesterday (July 24), and 15,573 cases the day before (July 23) – surged further to 17,045 today, according to Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The latest Covid-19 cases has brought the cumulative Covid-19 cases in the country to above a million at 1,013,438.

A total of 137,214 Covid-19 tests were conducted today, compared with 155,193 yesterday, with today’s positivity rate recorded at 12.42%.

Of the latest cases, Selangor contributed the highest number of infections at 8,500, followed by Kuala Lumpur at 2,045, Kedah at 1,216, and Johor at 950.

Meanwhile, 97.4% were those with little to no symptoms, comprising 9,123 or 53.5% classified as Category 1 (no symptoms), followed by 7,489 or 43.9% under Category 2 (mild symptoms).

Only 122 cases or 0.7% were classified as Category 3 (pneumonia),  124 cases or 0.7% were under Category 4 (pneumonia requiring oxygen therapy), and 187 cases or 1.1% were Category 5 (critical and requiring assisted ventilation).

Out of the newly confirmed cases today, 17,039 cases involved local transmission, while 6 were imported.

Meanwhile, 92 more coronavirus-related deaths were reported as of noon today, raising the cumulative number of deaths to 7,994.

Of the latest fatalities, 27 deaths were reported in Selangor, followed by 23 in Johor, 12 in Kuala Lumpur, 11 in Negeri Sembilan, 5 in Melaka, four in Kedah, three in Pahang, two each in Sabah and Sarawak, one each in Perak, Terengganu and Labuan.

New recoveries came in at 9,683, which raised total recoveries to 844,541, representing a recovery rate of 83.33%.

Active cases, however, climbed to 160,903 from 153,633 yesterday, as new cases continued to outpace daily recoveries.

A total of 970 patients are currently being treated in intensive care units, with 501 of them requiring breathing assistance.

R0 rose to 1.11 on July 24

The country's basic reproduction number (R-naught or R0) for Covid-19 infections nationwide rose to 1.11 yesterday (July 24), from 1.09 the day before, with Terengganu having the highest R0 at 1.36, followed by Kelantan (1.29) and Kedah (1.23).

All states posted R0 of more than 1.0, except for Labuan and Perlis.

The R0 projects the average number of people that each new Covid-19 patient will infect, or what is termed the effective reproduction number. An R0 of less than 1.0 means the infection is not spreading.

34 new clusters detected, 18 involving workplaces

A total of 34 new infection clusters were detected today, of which 18 involved workplaces and 15 linked to the community, while one was related to high-risk groups.

To date, 3,452 clusters have been detected by the ministry, with 2,460 declared ended, while 992 clusters are still active.
