KUALA LUMPUR (June 11): Malaysia reported 6,849 new daily Covid-19 cases, up from 5,671 a day earlier, according to the Ministry of Health (MOH).
However, the number of active cases continued to drop to 78,864 today, from 79,848 Thursday – after staying above the 80,000-mark for the ninth straight day. It is worth noting that the highest number of active cases, which have high transmission risks, was 86,628 on June 6.
According to Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, the number of new cases in Selangor climbed to 2,558, up 1048 cases from 1,510 on Thursday, due partly to its mass testing approach to curb the spread of the coronavirus before the herd immunity is achieved.
There were 99,974 individuals nationwide tested today, of whom 6,849 were positive for the virus, compared with 100,059 tested (5,671 tested positive) on Thursday and 90,887 tested (6,239 positive).
Kuala Lumpur reported 884 cases, followed by Sarawak (699) and Negeri Sembilan (685).
There were 84 new Covid-19 related deaths today. This raised the current fatalities to 3,768 from 2,867 as at June 1.
Of these 84 deaths, 19 cases were found in Selangor, 12 in Sarawak, eight in Labuan, seven in Johor, seven in Kuala Lumpur, nine in Negeri Sembilan, six in Pahang, six in Sabah, three in Terengganu, two in Melaka, while one each in Kelantan, Perak, Penang, Perlis and Kedah.
The number of Covid-19 patients in intensive care units (ICUs) rose to a new high of 912 today, of whom 458 needed ventilators to breathe.
On recoveries, 7,749 individuals have recovered from the disease, bringing the nationwide tally to 563,779 or 87.2% of overall infections.
Another 16 clusters detected
The ministry has detected 16 new clusters today, comprising 12 workplace clusters, three community clusters, and one linked to a high-risk group.
The new clusters are in Selangor, Johor, Sarawak, Sabah, Kuala Lumpur and Kelantan.
To date, 2,438 clusters have been detected in the country, of which 755 clusters are currently active.
