KUALA LUMPUR (May 21): Malaysia's number of daily newly confirmed Covid-19 cases dropped to 6,493 today from a record high of 6,806 yesterday, according to Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
This is the third consecutive day new cases stay above the 6,000 mark.
Fifty more deaths were reported today — 22 in Selangor, eight in Sarawak, five in Johor, four in Kedah, three in Kuala Lumpur, two in Negeri Sembilan, two in Perak, two in Melaka and one each in Penang and Kelantan — pushing the total fatalities due to the pandemic to 2,149 compared with only 474 as at Jan 1.
Active cases which carry high transmission risks jumped to 52,106 — the highest daily figure recorded since the pandemic started last year — leaving 643 Covid-19 patients in intensive care units while 363 of them need respiratory assistance.
Today, Selangor reported 2,163 newly confirmed Covid-19 cases, bringing the state's tally to 163,747.
Elsewhere, Kuala Lumpur and Sarawak reported 641 and 612 new cases respectively, according to Dr Noor Hisham's statement.
On recoveries, 4,508 individuals have recovered from the disease, lifting the total recoveries so far to 444,540 or 89.1% of overall infections.
18 new clusters detected today
The ministry detected 18 new Covid-19 clusters today, of which 10 were linked to workplaces, five related to religious activities while three were community clusters. These brought the number of active clusters to 529.
The 10 workplace clusters were Persiaran Perbandaran in Selangor, which saw 25 infections so far; Industri Balakong Tiga in Selangor (19); Jalan Wan Kadir in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor (eight); Jalan Simpang Tiga in Sarawak (14); Jalan Datin Halimah in Johor (10); Jalan Mengkibol in Johor (25); Jalan Selat in Perak (13); Industri Senawang in Negeri Sembilan (24); Sungai Keluang 2 in Penang (24); and Industri Kelemak in Melaka (25).
The five clusters linked to religious activities were Jalan Kota Raja in Selangor (37); Kampung Mujahidin in Selangor (41); Sri Penara in Kuala Lumpur (29); Taman Setiawangsa in Kuala Lumpur (13); and Jalan Surau Stulang in Johor (11).
Meanwhile, the three community clusters were Susur Laut in Perak (42); Jalan Tanjung Minyak in Melaka (24); and Simpang Sahari in Labuan (nine).
To date, 1,984 clusters have been reported in the country while 1,455 have been declared ended.
