KUALA LUMPUR (March 12): The former home (pictured) of the country’s first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj in Penang is up for sale at RM62 million, according to a listing on EdgeProp.my.

The listing also showed that the freehold property can be rented at RM25,000 a month.

Serena Tan, an agent with PG Property Angel, describes the house as “a well-preserved heritage listing; the double-storey detached residence fronting Jalan Park and Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman” in Pulau Tikus has an annexed servants' quarters, “surrounded by a lovely mature garden setting in a serene hideaway”.

Built up of the grand old home is at 9,867 sq ft while the land area is 64,472 sq ft.

According to the listing, the house has also been refurbished and renovated. For folks who are not familiar with Penang, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman is a road that goes through the Ayer Rajah area of George Town, to the west of Pulau Tikus.

Along the way, it intersects with Brown Road. It also forms junctions with Park Road, Taman Air Rajah (Ayer Rajah Garden) and Solok Air Rajah (Ayer Rajah Close).

The Royal Thai Consulate General and St Christopher's International School, are both “a stone's throw away from the site,” said Tan.

The Tunku lived in this property until he died in 1990.

According to news reports, the property was sold by the Tunku’s family after his death and it now belongs to a private company.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said Tunku Abdul Rahman is a national asset, not just a state asset, when asked to comment on the sale of the Tunku’s former house.

“We hope the federal government take note of this while the state will get more information on this and look into it,” he said.
