KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 24): Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases rose to 3,545 today from 2,468 recorded yesterday, with 12 more deaths, said the Health Ministry.

This was largely due to a jump in Negeri Sembilan’s daily cases to 1,392, of which 1,338 were linked to the Industri Sungai Gadut workplace cluster in Seremban.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the cluster was detected on Feb 22 through targeted screenings involving several workers in a wood factory at Kawasan Perindustrian Sungai Gadut. To date, the cluster has 1,432 infections, comprising 1,114 foreigners and 318 Malaysians.

Selangor was the second highest contributor of new infections today with 581 cases, followed by Kuala Lumpur (381), Sarawak (353), Johor (318), Perak (188), Sabah (105), Penang (95), Kelantan (53), Melaka (26), Terengganu (22),Kedah (17), Pahang (eight), Labuan (five) and Putrajaya (one).

To date, Malaysia’s new cases increased further to 291,774 versus 260,009 total recoveries.

Of the 12 fatalities, seven were reported from Kuala Lumpur, two from Selangor, with one each from Sabah, Terengganu and Penang. The deceased, involving 11 Malaysians and one foreigner, were aged between 52 and 98 years. This raised the pandemic's death toll here to 1,088.

As the number of new infections exceeded the 3,331 new recoveries, active cases that carry transmission risks climbed to 30,677 after declining steadily for 13 days.

Malaysia's confirmed Covid-19 infections now total 291,774, of which 260,009 have recovered.

Seven new workplace clusters identified

Dr Noor Hisham said eight new Covid-19 clusters were detected in the last 24 hours, of which seven are linked to workplaces while one is a community cluster.

The seven workplace clusters are: the Jalan Enam cluster in Petaling, Selangor (with 15 infections); the Jalan Ulu Choh cluster in Pontian, Johor (34); the Perindustrian Lukut cluster in Kota Tinggi, Johor (28); the Jalan Dato Yunus cluster in Johor Bahru, Johor (eight); the Pasar Bidor cluster in Batang Padang, Perak (25); the Lorong Bakau cluster in Seberang Perai Selatan in Penang (50); and the Vista Hilir cluster which spans Timur Laut and Barat Daya in Penang (35).

The lone community cluster, namely the Sinsingon cluster in Nabawan, Sabah has 18 infections.

To date, 1,103 infection clusters have been identified in Malaysia, while 594 clusters have ended as no new cases were reported from them in 28 days.
