PETALING JAYA (Jan 7): Golden Screen Cinemas (GSC) announced that it is closing their cinema outlets in Berjaya Times Square and Cheras Leisure Mall permanently.

The closure of the two cinemas in Kuala Lumpur was largely due to the extended movement control measures imposed by the government to contain the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We’ve had a good long run for GSC Cheras Leisure Mall and GSC Berjaya Times Square since 2005, but, due to the current situation with opening restrictions to comply with the CMCO, we have to shutter these cinemas permanently,” GSC said in their Facebook post.

Cinema operators’ income took a big hit during the coronavirus pandemic, as several outlets were required to be closed to contain the pandemic.

GSC CEO Koh Mei Lee earlier urged the government to let all cinemas nationwide operate again as the cinemas have been closed for over six months and owners all making losses.

On Oct 15, the country’s third largest cinema operator announced that 17 of its 27 cinema outlets nationwide would be closed until further notice.
