KUALA LUMPUR (Sept 11): Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases quadrupled to 182 today — of which 181 were local transmissions while one was an imported case, according to the Ministry of Health.
This spike in new cases were caused by a few clusters: the Benteng Lahad Datu (LD) cluster in Sabah — which recorded 167 cases where 91 involved foreigners — and two clusters in Kedah, where 11 cases were found in the Sungai cluster and the remaining three cases in the Telaga cluster.
Today’s new Covid-19 cases are the highest daily figure recorded since June 4, when 277 cases were reported.
Following this hike, active cases breached the 500-mark today, with 501 active cases. The last time Malaysia recorded more active cases was on June 17 with 521 cases.
According to health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, the 181 locally-transmitted cases involved 90 Malaysians and 91 foreigners.
As for the lone imported case, it involved a citizen of the Philippines. The case was reported in Selangor, according to Dr Noor Hisham's statement.
No new Covid-19 deaths were reported in the country — marking 10 days the death toll was maintained at 128, he said.
Meanwhile, total cumulative cases in the country jumped to 9,810 from 9,628 reported by the ministry yesterday.
On recoveries, 14 more Covid-19 patients were discharged, lifting the number of cured cases in the country to 9,181 or 93.6% of total cases.
Nine Covid-19 patients are currently being treated in intensive care units, with five needing ventilators.
