KUALA LUMPUR (May 10): The Ministry of Health (MoH) aims to bring the number of daily new Covid-19 infections, which it has largely kept within the double-digit range since mid-April, down further to single-digit figures within the next two weeks.
Its director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the success of the target would depend on the level of compliance among Malaysians with the newly extended conditional movement control order (CMCO).
"What we have to do now is to monitor the number of new cases being detected every day, and whether Malaysians comply with the standard operating procedures (cs)," he said during his daily Covid-19 press briefing today.
"If the public's compliance is high, we can control and reduce the number of cases detected," Noor Hisham added.
Earlier today, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced that the CMCO period will be extended by another four weeks, from May 13 to June 9.
Under the CMCO, which started on May 4, almost all economic sectors are reopened. However, interstate travelling is still restricted.
Noor Hisham said it had been less than a week since the implementation of the CMCO, so it can only be properly assessed within the next week or two.
"So far, although there are still three areas [coming] under an enhanced MCO, where we have conducted acute case detection, and there are new clusters detected, we can say that the number of cases is under control and we hope to maintain this," he added.
