PETALING JAYA (Dec 13): The woman claiming to be the second wife of former MIC president Tun S Samy Vellu, showed her thali (a chain tied by the groom around the bride’s neck in traditional Hindu marriages) to reporters reporters as proof that she and Samy Vellu were married, the Star reported today.

Many reporters only identified Meeriam Rosaline Edward Paul, 59, after one of her lawyers, RSN Rayer, approached her.

The Star quoted Meeriam saying she last met Samy Vellu, 83 at a restaurant in Kuala Lumpur on June 13.

“I want him to return home like he used to all the time and care for me like he promised,” she said.

“I am fully dependent on him, what am I supposed to do now?”

She also said they did not have any children together.

She had arrived at the High Court in Ipoh dressed in a gold saree with orange bodice in the company of her family members and another lawyer, Ramesh Sivakumar.

According to The Edge, Meeriam wants the court to recognise her 38-year-old relationship with Samy Vellu, to be allowed to see the former minister, and unpaid living costs amounting to RM191,107.35, which she claimed was owed to her when it was choked off by Samy Vellu's son Datuk Seri S. Vell Paari since July last year.

She also wants a one-off payment of RM20 million as lifetime living costs, as well as a monthly stipend of RM25,000.

Meeriam is also seeking an injunction against Vell Paari, 57, for preventing her from seeing Samy Vellu, and an injunction to prevent Vell Paari from fully controlling of his father's finances.

Vell Paari had filed an originating summons on his father for the court to determine if his father was mentally incapacitated by Alzheimer’s disease and whether the former senior minister can give instruction to his solicitors, and when he could be incapable.

A High Court hearing for an interim order to grant Meeriam full access to Samy Vellu was fixed for yesterday, but Justice Hashim Hamzah postponed the proceedings to Jan 17 to get an assessment of Samy Vellu’s mental state.
