MIRI (Dec 31): The authorities have reassured residents here that it “is highly unlikely that a super-typhoon will hit northern Sarawak” over the next few days.
According to a report by The Star today, the state’s assistant tourism minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin said “official checks” revealed that there is no “super-typhoon” heading to Sarawak.
"However, all relevant parties involved in flood mitigation and evacuation must be prepared for any possibilities.
"It is unlikely to be a super-typhoon but the rain may be heavy and the wind may be rather strong in the coming days as cautioned by the weather department.
"In any case, it is better to be fully prepared. However, there is no need for undue worry or panic," Lee told the English daily.
According to a report by Bernama, strong North-Easterly winds with speeds of 50-60 km per hour and choppy seas with waves of up to 4.5m high are expected to occur in waters north of Condore, north of Reef North and north of Palawan until Thursday, Jan 3.
