KUANTAN (Dec 17): The could have been a “failure in coordination between the local authorities and the Irrigation and Drainage Department” as “the same old problems” of flood are occurring in Pahang, said state Local Government and Housing Committee chairman Abd Rahim Muda.

According to a report in The Star today, Abd Rahim said floods which inundated “the lowlands here” recently could have been prevented “if the drainage system was well managed and maintained”.

Abd Rahim said the flood “was definitely due to poor maintenance of the drainage system as the flow of water to the drains was blocked”.

It was vital that “these old problems were looked into seriously” as another set of floods are expected to arrive starting from Dec 23, he said.

“Basically, both authorities should coordinate on this matter. There is no need to point fingers and look for mistakes,” the English daily reported Abd Rahim saying.
