GEORGE TOWN (Oct 29): Penang Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Zakiyuddin Abdul Rahman said the special committee established to probe the deadly Bukit Kukus landslide is not opened to the public, reported the Malay Mail.

“It should not be misunderstood as a commission open to public,” said when asked by the media if the committee will include members of civil society.

The report said civil society bodies such as Penang Forum and AnakPinang wanted to be included in the committee and “for the investigations to be a transparent process”.

Zakiyuddin said the Penang government established the committee to form its own conclusions based on independent investigations since were numerous agencies carrying out their own “probes”.

He also said the inquiry committee will conduct its first meeting this week and plans to present findings in a month.

“I don’t want to promise anything. We hope to complete the investigations within a month and submit our findings,” the news portal reported Zakiyuddin telling the media at a seminar on contemporary lifestyles in the Caring Society Complex here today.

Members of the inquiry committee include state Public Works executive council member Zairil Khir Johari and an engineer from the State Secretary’s office.
