“The review of the RM1 million threshold is timely in view of the slowdown in the domestic property market in the recent years and developers are operating in difficult situation.’’

The consumer body has proposed that action be taken only against banks that fail to lend to first-time homebuyers and those seeking to purchase affordable homes priced below RM300,000.

“If banks refuse to give loans, give us (the ministry) the list [names of rejected loan applicants] and we will check with the banks. If it’s not justified, we may consider taking action [against the banks],"

“If we reduce the compliance cost for houses priced below RM300,000, this will also encourage more affordable houses to be built by developers," said Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng.
