KUALA LUMPUR: The current Hentian Puduraya bus terminall will be undergoing a RM31 million facelift.
The Finance Ministry will allocate RM25 million for the facelift and the balance of RM6 million will come from UDA Holdings Bhd's (UDA) own funds, said UDA managing director Datuk Jaafar Abu Hassan during a press conference.
Upgrading will be in three phases mainly to make the place more comfortable for passengers, increase user-mobility while the mezzanine floor consisting mainly the waiting area will be fully air-conditioned. Disabled-friendly facilities will also be included while adding escalators and larger walkways.
The project's interior designer, Veritas Interiors Sdn Bhd's (Veritas) principal Shamsuddin Wahap said the bus terminal will be transformed and may look like contemporary airport-like lobbies: "We want to make the waiting experience more like an event", he says.
UDA also announced today that the company will take over the management of Puduraya Hotel effective Jan 1 2010 from Puduraya Hotel Sdn Bhd.
On the hotel's renovation plan, Shamsuddin told The Edge that renovation plans for the 12-storey hotel with 174 rooms are at the preliminary stages and will cost about RM5 million.
To-date, about RM5.3 million has been spent on phase one of Puduraya's makeover since end-May, focusing on improving air circulation, upgrading the fire prevention system, painting, preparing a coupon system for taxis and allocating larger waiting areas at its mezzanine floor.
Jaafar says the next phase scheduled to start this September, would include relocating the food court to the rooftop and to build ticket counters on the first floor. The makeover is expected to be completed end of November 2010 with the last phase focusing on building a new retail area and renovating its basement floor.
On whether current rentals will be raised from the average RM900 per month for the retail outlets there, Jaafar says the any increase in rental will not be drastic.
