KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 17 applicants have been pre-qualified as main contractors (MCs) and 15 applicants pre-qualified as nominated sub-contractors (NSCs) for the proposed Light Rail Transit (LRT) extension project of the Kelana Jaya and Ampang Lines, according to Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd (Prasarana) in a press statement on April 28.
Prasarana undertook a pre-qualification exercise for facilities work from Nov 3 to Dec 4, 2009. A total of 118 applicants submitted their applications by Dec 16, 2009.
The applicants were evaluated based on the submitted documents to ascertain their technical and financial capacity and capability to undertake the LRT extension project, said Datuk Idrose Mohamed, group managing director of Prasarana.
Of the 118 applicants, 65 were interested to qualify as MC and 17 were interested to qualify as NSC, while 36 were interested to qualify as both MC and NSC. The successful contractors will be notified officially in due time by Prasarana.
Since the announcement in September 2009, the project was put on public display as required by the Railways Act 1991 for three months from Sept 15 to Dec 14, 2009. All feedback received during the public display period was evaluated by the Department of Railways (DOR) and Prasarana was required to respond to DOR on all the various concerns expressed by the public.
Prasarana has held dialogue and clarification sessions with the general public, non-governmental organisations (NGO) and community leaders to brief them on the details of the proposed project. Prasarana has also addressed the various issues raised by the public with the State and Federal Government.
The final Railway Scheme of the project has been submitted to the DOR and Prasarana is awaiting final approval on the Railway Scheme from the government. Construction will commence upon obtaining the approval, said Idrose.
The project will be financed by Islamic bonds guaranteed by the government. In September 2009, Prasarana successfully launched a RM4 billion Sukuk programme of which RM2 billion has been raised and oversubscribed by 5.3 times for the 15-year and 2.7 times for the 20-year tranche to part finance the line extension project. The balance of RM2 billion will be raised as the project implementation progresses.
The proposed Kelana Jaya LRT extension line will run from Lembah Subang-Kelana Business Centre through Subang, USJ, Alam Megah and ends at the hub in Putra Heights. The proposed line will cover about 17km and consist of 13 stations.
The proposed Ampang LRT extension line will run from the present Sri Petaling station, through Puchong, Kinrara and ends at the hub in Putra Heights. This proposed line will consist of 13 stations and cover about 17.7km.
