PETALING JAYA (Dec 4): The mayor's official residence will only be used for council functions, according to current mayor of Petaling Jaya, Mohd Azizi Mohd Zain.

He said the official residence, which he had opted not to move into since taking office this year, would not be open to the public or residents’ associations to use.

“There are too many people that may want to use it, even residents’ associations. The residence is to be used for any official functions or by MBPJ (Petaling Jaya City Council) officers,” Azizi said.

However, he refrained from divulging which kind of functions had been held there to date.

“The reason I chose not to move in was because my home in Cheras was not far and there was no need.

“I am not afraid of ghosts, and the house is not haunted. That is not the reason why I don’t want to move in,” he said.

The Malaysian Insider previously reported that the six-bedroom, two-storey bungalow had not been occupied for the past two years.

Petaling Jaya residents want the city council to put the house to good use, including allowing them to use it as a centre for activities, saying it is wasteful for the bungalow in Jalan Tinggi, 6/12 to be left vacant.

The bungalow, which sits on 929 sq m of prime land and has a large garden, was built in 2010 to replace the previous official residence which was infested with termites. -- The Malaysian Insider
