KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 20): Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp), via its unit Malaysia Rapid Transit System Sdn Bhd (MRTS), has signed a sale and purchase agreement with Coronade Properties Sdn Bhd for the acquisition of 781 parking bays at Coronation Square, Johor Bahru.

These parking bays will be dedicated to Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link commuters, further enhancing connectivity and accessibility for those using the cross-border service between Johor Bahru and Singapore.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said that once the project is completed, the additional parking lots for cars and motorcycles dedicated to RTS Link commuters at Coronation Square will be owned and managed by MRT Corp, which would be a source of recurring income.

“Although we need to purchase these parking spaces, the acquisition is a long-term investment, as we will own and manage them as recurring income in the future.

“I want to stress the importance of connectivity and integration elements between these parking bays and the Bukit Chagar station,” he said at a press conference after witnessing the signing of the agreement between MRTS and Coronade Properties here on Tuesday.

Loke also urged developers and building owners around Bukit Chagar to integrate with the Bukit Chagar station by building a pedestrian bridge.

“My goal is to see Bukit Chagar as a model of Central, Hong Kong, where all the buildings around the centre are all integrated within one area, and [users] can walk from one building to another via a pedestrian bridge up to their stations.

“Walkability and integration are a very important part of the RTS Link project," he said.

The agreement was signed by MRT Corp chief executive officer Datuk Mohd Zarif Hashim and Coronade Properties director of corporate relations Datin Paduka Alinah Ahmad, and witnessed by Loke and MRT Corp chairman Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad.

The construction of the RTS Link rail infrastructure project between Johor Bahru and Singapore had reached 83% progress by the end of July.

With system installation expected to begin by year end, MRT Corp will build a new multi-storey Park 'N Ride parking facility in Bukit Chagar for RTS Link passengers, including 1,500 parking lots, complementing the additional parking bays at Coronation Square, which is located just 400 metres from the Bukit Chagar station.

Coronation Square, a RM5 billion fully integrated development, is a key component of the Ibrahim International Business District and poised to become a landmark in Johor Bahru.
