KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 12) : Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases increased slightly to 7,276 on Tuesday (Oct 12) from 6,709 recorded on the previous day, according to Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a tweet.
Only 150 or 2.1% of the new cases were serious, involving those in Categories 3 (patients with pneumonia), 4 (patients with pneumonia requiring oxygen therapy) and 5 (critical patients requiring assisted ventilation), the Health Ministry said in a separate statement.
The remaining 7,126 cases or 97.9% involved people who showed no symptoms or mild symptoms (Categories 1 and 2).
There were 724 patients in intensive care units, of which 683 were confirmed Covid-19 cases and 41 were suspected cases under investigation, said Dr Noor Hisham.
Of those in intensive care, 398 required ventilators to breathe, he added.
156,567 Covid-19 tests conducted with 4.65% positivity rate
Daily recoveries came in higher than new infections at 10,555, according to Dr Noor Hisham.
A total of 2,217,057 recoveries have been recorded since the pandemic began, from a total of 2,353,579 infections detected, translating to a recovery rate of 94.2%.
Meanwhile, a total of 156,567 Covid-19 tests were conducted on Tuesday (Oct 12), with a positivity rate of 4.65%.

The Health Ministry also announced 14 new clusters on Tuesday (Oct 12) — comprising six workplace clusters, while the rest were communities, high-risk and private educational institutions clusters.

MoH removes pre-departure Covid-19 screening for Langkawi travellers
Separately, the Health Ministry also scrapped the pre-departure mandatory Covid-19 screening requirement for Langkawi travellers beginning Tuesday (Oct 12).
Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin said the decision was made after only 0.4% of travellers tested positive at airports and ferry terminals before departing for Langkawi.
“Individuals undergoing quarantine because they are Covid-19 positive or are close contacts, are strictly not allowed to travel.
“As for those who have symptoms such as cough, fever or flu, they are advised to postpone their travel,” said Khairy.
