KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 24): National Security Council (NSC) requires businesses that have reopened under phase 3 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP) to ensure the quality of indoor air and ventilation to prevent the spread of Covid-19, reported Malay Mail.
According to the updated SOPs set released by NSC on Aug 23, businesses like retail malls, restaurants, laundry shops, vehicle workshops and hair salons are required to adhere to the guidelines on ventilation and indoor air quality released by the Human Resources Ministry’s Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) on July 8.
Under the guidelines, DOSH recommended opening windows or doors to increase natural airflow, reduce the number of people in a confined air-conditioned space, as well as use of portable air purifiers to enhance indoor air quality.
Businesses were also asked to limit temperature checkpoints to only one at the main entrances, as well as limit the number of customers to one person per four sq m or one metre physical distance between customers.
NSC also highlighted that restaurant, laundry shops, laundromats, barbershops, hair salons and beauty centres, opticians as well as common facilities of petrol stations such as suraus and toilets, are to ensure good ventilation and airing systems.
Meanwhile, EdgeProp Malaysia is also championing the call for better indoor air and ventilation in buildings. It is noteworthy that EdgeProp Malaysia’s Guidance Note discusses both existing and new buildings. The importance of fresh air flow indoors, cross ventilation and the use of air-purifying installations or equipment in confined spaces is highlighted.
