KUALA LUMPUR (July 1): Malaysia’s Covid-19 cases are on the rise again after one month of the Full Movement Control Order (FMCO), with the Health Ministry reporting 6,988 new infections today.
This compares with 6,276 cases yesterday, and marks the third consecutive day that new infections stayed above 6,000.
Today’s cases represent a 7.9% positivity rate from 88,450 people tested nationwide in the last 24 hours.
The nationwide FMCO came into effect on June 1, when 7,105 Covid-19 cases were recorded.
In a statement today, Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said Selangor registered the highest number of cases again with 2,885. This is the third straight day the State’s fresh infections stood above the 2,000 mark.
Kuala Lumpur was in second place with 988 cases, sharply higher from 625 yesterday.
The Government today announced an enhanced MCO (EMCO) in a number of localities in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur for two weeks due to the spike in cases there.
Elsewhere, Negeri Sembilan recorded 692 cases, followed by Sarawak (544) and Melaka (311).
Active cases rose to 65,453 — the highest in 13 days. This came as daily recoveries were lower than new infections at 5,580.
Total recoveries stood at 688,260 or 90.7% of cumulative confirmed infections which now stand at 758,967.
Dr Noor Hisham also confirmed 84 more deaths — 46 in Selangor, six in Kuala Lumpur, six in Negeri Sembilan, six in Johor, five in Sabah, four in Sarawak, four in Melaka, three in Labuan, two in Pahang, while one each in Terengganu and Putrajaya.
This brought total fatalities linked to the coronavirus to 5,254.
The number of patients in intensive care units rose to 917, including 445 on ventilators.
21 new clusters identified, including 11 workplace clusters
The Ministry also detected another 21 new Covid-19 clusters, comprising 11 workplace clusters, nine community clusters and one high-risk group cluster.
To date, 2,865 clusters have been reported in the country of which 1,978 have been declared ended.
