PETALING JAYA (June 2): Some eight property-related tycoons, including retail and renewable energy, have topped the Forbes Korea 50 Rich List 2021 with a collective net worth of US14.9 billion (RM61.5 million), according to Forbes Asia report today.

This year’s Forbes Korea Rich List saw a record number of 46 billionaires and the collective wealth of the 50 richest rose by over 40% to US$156 billion, up from US$110.8 billion previously.

Topping the list is the pharma magnate Seo Jung Jin with a net worth of US$12.5 billion (RM51.6 billion). The 63-year-old co-founder of Celltrion, a biopharmaceutical firm that makes drugs to treat cancer, influenza and rheumatoid arthritis.

The founder and chairman of Hoban Construction Kim Sang Yeol, one of South Korea's top builders, is now one of the country’s top richest businessmen, according to Forbes Korea Rich List 2021.

The 60-year-old who has gained his billionaire status in 2019, is now included in the Forbes Korea 50 richest list. He is ranked No 20 with a net worth of US$2 billion.

Other real estate players in the list include Booyoung Group’s Lee Joong Keun (No 22) and IS Dongseo’s Kwon Hyuk Woon (No 49).

Joong Keun, the founder of property and construction giant Booyoung Group, is known for introducing rental housing in South Korea. His net worth is US$1.9 billion.

Hyuk Woon has returned to the top 50 richest list after three years. He has a net worth of US$950 million and currently chairs IS Dongseo, builder of luxury housing and construction materials.  Prior to IS Dongseo, he founded Il Shin Construction in 1989.

Ranked No 44, Gim Seong-Gon is the newcomer to the list. The 67-year-old is the chairman of CS Wing - a company that focuses on renewable energy through the construction of wind towers. The push stemmed from government efforts toward renewable energy is a reflection to his net worth of US$1.1 billion.

Notably, Lee Boo-Jin, the eldest daughter of the late Samsung chairman Lee Kun-hee, is ranked at ninth place with a net worth of US$4.9 billion.

She is also the president and chief executive of Hotel Shilla. Hotel Shilla is South Korea’s top lodging and conference centre and is also the second biggest duty free operator after Lotte.
