KUALA LUMPUR (May 29): The Ministry of Health (MoH) has reported a total of 9,020 cases today, marking the fifth consecutive day of record high daily cases, bringing the total number of infections to date in Malaysia to 558,534 cases.

Of the total number of daily cases, 9,015 were domestic transmissions while five were import cases.

According to the ministry, Selangor posted the highest number of cases by state with a total of 2,836 cases today, followed by Kelantan (907), Negeri Sembilan (898), Kuala Lumpur (789), and Sarawak (726).

A total of 5,527 new recoveries were reported, bringing the cumulative figure to 479,666, while 98 deaths were reported, translating to a total death toll of 2,650.

A total of 844 patients are being treated in intensive care units, with 430 patients requiring ventilators.

The total number of active cases increased 4.7% to 76,218 from 72,824 yesterday.

Meanwhile, a total of 23 clusters were identified, bringing the total number of active clusters to 630.

The ministry said that since Dec 7, 2020, there have been 51 cross-state clusters, stemming from 6,468 cases which reported by the Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre (CPRC).

These include those stemming from index cases that returned to their hometowns for Aidilifitri celebrations, visiting relatives, marriage ceremonies, birthdays, funerals or courses in other states.

Between April 1, 2021 and May 28, 2021, a total of 20 cross-state clusters were identified, from 1,420 cases reported.

Of the total, Melaka reported the highest number of clusters (eight), followed by Terengganu (three), Kelantan, Perak and Pahang (two clusters each).

At the same time, between May 13 and 28, 26 sub-clusters stemmed from Aidilfitri celebrations, as reported by the CPRC, comprising 1,019 cases. Two deaths have been reported from these clusters.

“Seeing the situation as above, MoH would like to take this opportunity to call on the community to take heed and not repeat it for the Kaamatan Festival and Hari Gawai which will be celebrated soon.

“The same goes for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration which usually lasts up to one month. The public is reminded that cross-district and state bans are still in effect,” said the ministry.
