KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 30): Malaysia today recorded 1,870 new Covid-19 cases with six more deaths, pushing the cumulative confirmed infections in the country to 110,485, and the death toll to 463.

Johor overtook Selangor as the biggest contributor of new infections today, with 607 cases, according to a statement from health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

The spike in cases in the state came mostly from the Tembok Choh cluster, which recorded 374 new cases. The cluster spans the Johor Bahru, Pontian, Kota Tinggi, Kulai, and Mersing districts.

Selangor was in second place with 472 cases, while Sabah came in third with 280 cases, according to Dr Noor Hisham’s statement.

He added that 745 Covid-19 patients recovered today, bringing the tally to 87,460, or 79.2% of overall cases.

But as the daily recoveries continue to lag behind new infections, the number of active cases — those that carry high transmission risks — climbed further to another record high of 22,562 — marking the fifth consecutive day in which it stayed above the 20,000 mark.

As for the six fatalities, they involved five men and one woman, aged between 45 and 69 years. Four casualties were recorded in Sabah, and one each in Selangor and Johor.

All but two of the new cases today were transmitted locally. The two were separately infected in Indonesia and India.

Eight new clusters identified, with three linked to workplaces

Besides Tembok Choh, the Health Ministry identified seven other new Covid-19 clusters today, for a total of eight, with three linked to the workplace, said Dr Noor Hisham.

The three workplace-related clusters are the Broga construction site cluster in Hulu Langat, Selangor (with 64 cases); and the Jalan Stesen construction site cluster (54 cases) and Slot Berjaya cluster (nine cases) in Lembah Pantai here.

The remainder five clusters are:
· Tembok Choh cluster in Johor (382 cases)
· Jalan Nikolas cluster in Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur (six cases)
· Gerbang Pongsu cluster involving Kerian and Kinta in Perak (eight cases)
· Damai Ketari cluster in Bentong, Pahang (21 cases)
· Alor cluster which spans Kota Setar in Kedah, as well as Titiwangsa and Cheras in Kuala Lumpur (20 cases)

As of today, the ministry has identified 506 clusters, said Dr Noor Hisham.

Of that, 283 clusters have ended or closed — including five more today — with no new cases recorded within 28 days. The five newly-ended clusters are: the Sungai Mulia construction site cluster in Kuala Lumpur, the Assumption cluster in Kedah and Penang, the Blok 31 cluster in Sabah, the Tanjung Bunga cluster in Johor, and the Jeri cluster in Johor.
