Malaysia’s new Covid-19 cases climbed to 1,210 today — from 1,103 cases yesterday — marking five straight days of the number of daily cases staying above the 1,000-mark.

The Klang Valley today recorded 518 new cases, representing 42.8% of today’s cases. This comprised Selangor with 271 cases, Kuala Lumpur with 245 cases and two cases in Putrajaya, according to Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

He noted that 435 cases that were reported in the Klang Valley area today came from existing and new Covid-19 clusters.

According to Noor Hisham's statement, 348 cases were detected among the clusters linked to the Damanlela construction site cluster in Kuala Lumpur which reported 206 cases involving foreign workers, and the Teratai cluster with 142 cases.

For the Teratai cluster, Dr Noor Hisham said 131 out of 142 cases involved foreign workers. According to him, the cluster has a total of 370 positive cases.

It was reported by several news portals that the Teratai cluster was linked to the world's largest glove manufacturer, Top Glove Corp Bhd.

The Top Glove worker’s hostel located in Klang, Selangor has been put under Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO) from today until Nov 30 due to a spike of Covid-19 cases there, as announced by the Senior Minister (Defence) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob yesterday.

“[Meanwhile], Sabah recorded 499 cases (41.2%) of today’s total cases. Some 122 cases were reported in the Sandakan prison cluster, while 106 cases were found in the newly-discovered cluster, namely the Avenue cluster,” said Dr Noor Hisham.

For the Covid-19 related prison clusters, he said 20 cases came from the Tembok cluster, 16 cases from the Kepayan prison cluster and 14 cases from the Seberang Perai Prison cluster.

As the total number of infected persons increased further to 49,730, active cases which carry high transmission risks soared to a fresh record high of 12,788.

There are 105 Covid-19 patients being treated in intensive care, with 40 needing respiratory assistance.

In addition, five more deaths were reported. This brought the cumulative number of fatalities due to the pandemic to 318 so far, noted Dr Noor Hisham.

Four fatalities were reported in Sabah while the other was in Perak. The deceased were aged between 25 and 80 years.

“Besides, 19 imported cases were reported today from 1,210 new cases nationwide. Five involved Malaysians while 14 were foreigners who returned from Nepal with four cases, Qatar (3), India (3), the Philippines (2), Nigeria (1), the US (1), Turkey (1), Russia (1), Tunisia (1), Romania (1) and Myanmar (1),” said Dr Noor Hisham.

The Ministry said 1,018 persons were reported to have recovered today. This is the second highest figure of daily recoveries recorded since the pandemic struck in January. To date, Malaysia has reported a total of 36,624 recoveries.
