WASHINGTON (Nov 8): Joe Biden has been elected as the 46th president of the United States, CNN and other US media reported on Sunday.
Biden crossed the 270 electoral threshold Saturday morning, clinching the race with his victory in Pennsylvania, according to the AFP. Sen. Kamala Harris will join the President-elect as the first Black, Indian, and female Vice President in American history. Biden received more than 4 million more votes than Trump overall.
According to CNN report, quoting a written statement by Biden on Nov 7, the new president said he was "honored and humbled" by the trust the American people have placed in him.
"In the face of unprecedented obstacles, a record number of Americans voted. Proving once again, that democracy beats deep in the heart of America," Biden said. "With the campaign over, it's time to put the anger and the harsh rhetoric behind us and come together as a nation...We are the United States of America. And there's nothing we can't do, if we do it together."
Meanwhile, Biden also called for unity on Nov 6 after being projected to be the winner of the fiercely contested 2020 election, Xinhua news agency reported.
"With the campaign over, it's time to put the anger and the harsh rhetoric behind us and come together as a nation," Biden said in a statement.
