PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will charge several individuals over Mara’s Australian property scandal.
MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki (pictured) said during an interview MACC.fm that the deputy public prosecutor has already agreed “for those involved to be charged”.
“The deputy public prosecutor has agreed to charge several individuals, we are in the midst of arranging it, one individual may be in Sabah under quarantine. We are not protecting anyone,” Azam said.
According to a report by Free Malaysia Today, the scandal involves Mara’s purchase of an apartment complex in Australia back in 2013.
In 2015, Mara's investment wing was embroiled in controversy following a revelation by Australian newspaper The Age, which claimed it had spent millions of ringgit to buy a five-storey apartment block in Melbourne at above market price.
The newspaper claimed that 'a group of extremely rich Malaysian officials' had overpaid by A$4.75 million to buy an apartment in Melbourne in 2013, namely A$22.5 million instead of A$17.8 million, with the difference going towards kickbacks paid to Malaysian foreign officials.
Dudley International House is a student accommodation bought by Mara.
