KUALA LUMPUR (July 17): The Ministry of Health (MoH) announced 18 new Covid-19 cases as of noon today — the highest daily figure since June 21 when 16 new cases were reported.
The number of daily infections has turned into double-digits again after four straight days of single-digit cases.
Today’s new cases brought the country’s tally of Covid-19 infections to 8,755.
The number of active cases stood at 92 at present, up from 77 reported yesterday. Three patients remained in the intensive care unit with none requiring ventilator support.
Noor Hisham added that three more patients have recovered and discharged from hospitals today, bringing the current rate of recoveries to 8,541 (97.6% of the total cases).
According to his statement, no new Covid-19 death was reported today, with the death toll standing at 122.
Of the 18 new cases, 10 were imported cases involving seven Malaysians and three non-citizens who were permitted to enter the country for work, said Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.
Meanwhile, eight were local transmissions related to six Malaysians and two non-citizens.
Providing the breakdown of cases for the locally-transmitted cases involving Malaysians, four cases were found in Sarawak and two cases in Terengganu.
“One case was detected through a Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) case in Sarawak General Hospital, one case from Kuching medical centre cluster, and two cases from screening of the workplace (the patients were asymptomatic and admitted to Sarawak General Hospital).
“Two cases in Terengganu were linked to the PUI Pitakwa cluster,” said Noor Hisham in his statement.
For the two locally-transmitted cases involving non-citizens, one case in Kuala Lumpur was detected through the PUI Shirala cluster, while another case in Selangor was found through screening before the patient went overseas.
