KUALA LUMPUR (April 1): Malaysia today reported its highest daily jump in the number of patients who have recovered from Covid-19 at 108, pushing the recovery tally to 645 since the first coronavirus case was detected in the country over two months ago in late January.

However, new infections continue to be recorded, with 142 new cases discovered as of noon today, which brings the total confirmed cases in the country to 2,908, according to the Director-General (DG) of Health Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah.

Also continuing to climb is the death toll, with two individuals — one aged 80 and the other 62 — added to the total, which now stands at 45.

“Of the cases, 102 are in the intensive care unit, with 66 of them requiring respiratory assistance,” Dr Noor Hisham said in a statement.

The two deceased individuals were an 80-year-old woman and a 62-year-old man.

The woman suffered from diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.

She had close contact with a Covid-19 patient and was treated at Kuala Lumpur Hospital on March 13.

She passed away at 4.30am yesterday.

Meanwhile, the man, who had diabetes and high blood pressure, had close contact with a Covid-19 patient. He passed away at 10.46pm yesterday.

So far, 102 patients are in the intensive care unit, with 66 of them needing help to breathe.

Selangor has 22 new cases and remains the state with the highest number of infections with 726 confirmed infections, followed by Kuala Lumpur (up 25 cases to 455), Johor (up 19 cases to 368), and Sabah (up three cases to 209).

DG calls for more volunteers

Dr Noor Hisham said the MoH welcomes more volunteers to join the health and medical support teams to combat the Covid-19 outbreak in Malaysia.

Those who are or have worked in healthcare and wish to volunteer may fill out registration forms here and here.

To date, 2,359 volunteers have joined and been assigned in stages to the Covid-19 health and medical support teams.

The volunteers consist of various medical professions that include 65 medical specialists in various fields, 909 nurses, 704 assistant medical officers, 56 physiotherapists and many more.

Noor Hisham also addressed several claims about Covid-19 cures and preventative supplements and measures, saying there were no scientific studies to substantiate these claims.

He instead advised the public to consume at least 2 litres of water, eat three servings of vegetables and two servings of fruit daily to stay healthy.
